Avalon Chef, Cathy Conway, Does Her Part to Bring the Farm to the Schools!
Farm-to-school programs connect schools to local farms with the objectives of serving healthy meals in school cafeterias, improving student nutrition and providing health and nutrition education opportunities that will last a lifetime. Cathy has had the opportunity to assist local schools in planting their own organic gardens and demonstrating to students how to harvest and prepare their fresh produce. Children who may not have appreciated vegetables and fruits suddenly realize that they enjoy the taste of fresh produce grown in their own gardens. It’s a great way to make a difference in the way future generations choose their food.

Avalon Supports the Atlanta Community Food Bank
Avalon has donated just over 300 lbs of food to The Atlanta Community Food Bank during 2009! This is a wonderful opportunity to reduce waste and provide a healthy meal for people in need all around Atlanta.
Plant a Local Garden
Avalon has planted our first raised beds. We are growing lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, fresh herbs, peppers, tomatillos, sweet potatoes and squash. We’ve also integrated composting into the process. While purchasing 8 cubic yards of vegetable ready, organic soil, the salesperson informed us that business was brisk: this was the most soil sold in a season since she started in 1992. A great sign for local gardens!
